It’s easy to know when your vehicle has been damaged by hail. Why? Because you can see it! And for most of us, our vehicles are our first concern when hail hits. But, should vehicles be our foremost concern? Did you know that the roof of your home is also subject to hail damage? Additionally, the roof of your home is oftentimes as much or more expensive than your vehicle and arguably more important due to what it protects. Not to say that your car isn’t special, just don’t forget about your roof! Here are a few things to look for if your home is in an area that has been impacted by a hailstorm.
How to Check for Hail Damage:
- Check the aesthetics of your roof shingles. Shingles are often the easiest way to see if you’ve been a victim to hail damage. You may see hail imprints, tears, some may be blown off, some may not be laying flush with the others, or you may see all the above.
- Check the gutters around your roof for dings. Usually, if you see dings, dents, and scratches on your gutters after a hail storm, you’ve suffered roof damage. After all, if the hail is strong enough to damage your metal gutters, your shingles have probably taken a beating.
- Look for the obvious. Walk around your home and look up at the ceiling. Do you see any water staining? In geographic areas impacted by large hail, roofs can be completely compromised and penetrated causing leaks to ensue. Check for broken windows, dings on your vehicles, fallen tree limbs in the yard. If you see any of these things, it’s a good indicator that you need to have your roof inspected immediately.
If you’re not sure how to properly inspect your roof, you’re not alone. Sometimes the damage is obvious, sometimes it can be difficult to discover.
